Chapter 5 treats Jess Franco’s two “low” European remakes of Les yeux. The chapter situates Franco within the larger context of Spanish film culture and attempts to demonstrate the revolutionary implications of making “body genre” films during the fascist era. Chapters 6 through 8 deal with horror and the avant-garde. Chapter 6 discusses Yoko Ono’s documentary Rape (1969), a cinema verité film in which a real woman is really stalked by Ono’s film crew. In addition to raising ethical questions about the very existence of such a film, and of other avant-garde documentaries of the period, the chapter discusses the way that such issues entered mainstream discussion through press coverage of an alleged snuff film, and Yoko Ono’s own relationship to “low” culture and exploitation cinema.

Claude Chabrol, Jean-Luc Godard, Jean-Pierre Melville, Luc Moullet, and François Truffaut were all, Hoberman and Rosenbaum point out, “early apostles of the MacMahonist faith” (26). Two defining works of the French New Wave, Breathless and Shoot the Piano Player, fragment themselves “into a shrine of MacMahonist fetishes”: the celebration of petty gangsters’ ethical codes, the iconization of macho figures such as Bogart, the appearance of important figures such as Jean-Pierre Melville and important cultural signifiers such as Cahiers du cinéma within the works, the homage to the “style of a cheap 1950s Columbia Pictures Melodrama,” and the crossing of “metaphysical absolutes with locker-room sexual humor” (28).
